Women’s First Grade Season Review

Women’s First Grade Season Review

From the Captain: Amanda Skellern

The season really has flown by!! I think the squad can be so proud of what we’ve achieved this year, finishing stronger in the club championship and coming together as a squad with new players, younger players transitioning to seniors, plus a good dose of the usual suspects. As our second year up in NPL1, I think we’ve started to become more familiar with the pace and standard. It was great to see both ressies and firsts show off their own style of play, with a bit of flair and of course backed by those Tigers trademarks. It’s been a pleasure to get to know our new coaches this year – Richie and Danillo – who took so many things in their stride. They both have a great understanding of the game and a sense of humour, the two most important ingredients for coaching senior women. It was a year of a few serious injuries, and of girls taking time out to travel (I mean…who needs Europe when you have NTRA?!). But the hard work from the coaches and players meant we could remain competitive right up until our last game. We’ll be looking forward to presentation night now and enjoying our off-season. In the meantime, please feel free to reach out to Georgia Goulding who needs to fill her social calendar without football!

What’s been your favourite game of the season?

This question is never fair! The huge support from the Tigers men’s teams at our first round match against Mariners made it one to remember. I also loved our second-round games against Koalas. This was a week we had 20 seniors playing across the two teams. Ressies were playing top of the table and played out a really exciting match to draw 2-2 against a team that will likely win the Grand Final. In first grade, we ground out a 0-0 draw, and Bo and Saba from the 17’s both made their first grade debuts! They really shined and we all came off feeling pretty chuffed I think! Looking back, it was just great to be undefeated that weekend and see both teams playing which so much spirit given our chances of reaching finals were slim at this stage!

What’s been the best moment off the pitch this season?

Every year we plan an overnight stay at our furthest away-game, which led us to Newcastle this year for a really fun trip – although there is the constant fear that Eliza would do some sort of horrible prank while we were sleeping. Not sure if this counts as off-the pitch, but having our physio Eloise play a role in our strength and conditioning training this year has also led to a fair amount of laughs with the exercises she makes us do. Finally, I have to mention our treasured catch-ups with the U12s and U13s Girls SAP players throughout the season. They are a pleasure to be around, are very impressive on the pitch, and it was great to see the senior players engaging with the up-and-coming Tigers!
