McGee Joins for 2019

Welcome to Marshall McGee to the Northern Tigers coaching staff for Season 2019.

Marshall is a Strength and Conditioning Coach, currently working in the Athletic Development department for Shore School in North Sydney and is also a coach with The Academy of Sports Speed and Agility Australia (ASSA). Since completing his Bachelor of Exercise Science in 2014, he has worked in several roles including, S&C Coach at the NSW Waratahs, Rehabilitation Coordinator for Wests Tigers Rugby League, Sport Scientist for the Southland Stags in New Zealand, and Performance Coach at Tempus Australia in Thornleigh.

Marshall has most of his professional experience with rugby clubs but has played football (soccer) for 17 years in both the Nepean District and Bathurst regions. He is very passionate about working with athletes and helping them improve their physical performance on the field, and increasing their injury resilience through strength, power and speed training.

From November 2018, Marshall will be working with all Northern Tigers and Northern Lions Teams. He will be present at training from 5pm to 8pm, Monday to Thursday, for the entire season, splitting his time between our two training venues, NTRA and Charles Bean.

Player Profile: Lachlan Lloyd

How long have you been playing for Northern Tigers?

This is my 8th year at the club. I played in the u11’s for 2 years starting in 2010 before playing in the u12’s. After a year off in 2013, I came back in 2014 and have played here ever since.

Who have been the been the biggest influences in your football career?

Of course, my parents have been very big influences on my football career, but I would have to say Gui Da Souza has been the one coach that had the biggest effect on me. He helped me to become a better player but also a better person. He coached our Tigers 15’s and 16’s team in a way that made us all love football with his focus on creativity and scoring goals reflecting his Brazilian heritage. The result of this has shown with some of the boys from that team now at A-League clubs which is a true testament to his work. Adam Hett, my coach this year, has also had a big impact on the technical side of my game and has helped me improve to be a better all-round player.

Which clubs have you previously played for?

I played for Lindfield junior football club and have always loved playing for my school, Barker College, but other than that its always been Tigers for me.

What do you enjoy most about playing for Northern Tigers?

It’s been said a lot this year, but the culture of the club no matter what team you are in is hard to match anywhere. The boys always seem to get along and it helps us to perform better on the pitch.

What position do you play? Have you always played there?

I play CAM or CDM and have played there for a few years now. Before that I played left wing but I became a bit too slow so I moved into the midfield. I love to be able to read and control the game from the centre of the park so I think it was the right move.

Do you have a favourite club/player? Who/why?

For as long as I can remember I have gone for Liverpool so it is nice to be having a few good seasons after a number of tough years for the club. Like many red supporters, I have always looked up to Steven Gerrard and the way he played. For me, he was the complete midfielder that made the early morning wake ups worth it.

What is your best football memory?

It’s hard to go past being part of a team that went 54 games unbeaten which included beating big NPL 1 clubs like Blacktown and Sydney United. This team, coached by Gui, also won a championship and smashed every team on a tour to England and to make it even better we all became very close mates. A moment that came close would be winning the Combined Associated Schools competition with my School team this year. It came down to the last game of the season and was a special day winning the comp on a local derby in front of my school. Sorry wigs!!

Women’s First Grade Season Review

From the Captain: Amanda Skellern

The season really has flown by!! I think the squad can be so proud of what we’ve achieved this year, finishing stronger in the club championship and coming together as a squad with new players, younger players transitioning to seniors, plus a good dose of the usual suspects. As our second year up in NPL1, I think we’ve started to become more familiar with the pace and standard. It was great to see both ressies and firsts show off their own style of play, with a bit of flair and of course backed by those Tigers trademarks. It’s been a pleasure to get to know our new coaches this year – Richie and Danillo – who took so many things in their stride. They both have a great understanding of the game and a sense of humour, the two most important ingredients for coaching senior women. It was a year of a few serious injuries, and of girls taking time out to travel (I mean…who needs Europe when you have NTRA?!). But the hard work from the coaches and players meant we could remain competitive right up until our last game. We’ll be looking forward to presentation night now and enjoying our off-season. In the meantime, please feel free to reach out to Georgia Goulding who needs to fill her social calendar without football!

What’s been your favourite game of the season?

This question is never fair! The huge support from the Tigers men’s teams at our first round match against Mariners made it one to remember. I also loved our second-round games against Koalas. This was a week we had 20 seniors playing across the two teams. Ressies were playing top of the table and played out a really exciting match to draw 2-2 against a team that will likely win the Grand Final. In first grade, we ground out a 0-0 draw, and Bo and Saba from the 17’s both made their first grade debuts! They really shined and we all came off feeling pretty chuffed I think! Looking back, it was just great to be undefeated that weekend and see both teams playing which so much spirit given our chances of reaching finals were slim at this stage!

What’s been the best moment off the pitch this season?

Every year we plan an overnight stay at our furthest away-game, which led us to Newcastle this year for a really fun trip – although there is the constant fear that Eliza would do some sort of horrible prank while we were sleeping. Not sure if this counts as off-the pitch, but having our physio Eloise play a role in our strength and conditioning training this year has also led to a fair amount of laughs with the exercises she makes us do. Finally, I have to mention our treasured catch-ups with the U12s and U13s Girls SAP players throughout the season. They are a pleasure to be around, are very impressive on the pitch, and it was great to see the senior players engaging with the up-and-coming Tigers!

Club Profile: Zach Morris

Men’s First Grade player Zach started out coaching with XLR8 (formerly NSFA Football School), before graduating to become a Northern Tigers & Lions SAP coach and obtaining his FFA C licence.

How did you first become involved in football within NSFA?

I played for Lindfield and Northbridge since Under 6’s. I then in Under 11’s joined  in the Northern Tigers development squad in 2008 and then into the team in 2009 for the under 12’s year. Before then  Ever since playing for Northern Tigers I have loved the passion, support and culture of the club entirely all the way through to first grade and I haven’t looked back.

How did you become involved in coaching?

I became involved in coaching at NSFA Football School (now XLR8) around the years of 2014-2015 and enjoyed it immensely and so joined the representative SAP program as a coach in 2016 with theUnder 9’s Northern Tigers. Since then I have coached the under 11’s through a number of years across both Northern Tigers and Northern Lions. These elite squads were a step up in the enjoyment and challenges I got from coaching. Being one of many players that coach at same club it creates a link between the older players and the youngest members of the club, this is something I see as important for all clubs in creating a community culture.

Can you comment on the ability of players within the SAP program compared to yourself as a 9 – 12 year old?

The ability of these players is much better compared to when I was their age. The overall team and individual ability from the majority of the players is often amazing. But this should be the case considering at their age, the facilities, quality of coaching, the amount of training and the dedication to training has significantly increased and therefore as a result the talent has increased.

What do you see as fundamental to develop in players between the ages 9 – 12 years?

For me there are 3 basic things that need to be developed in SAP football, the first and most obvious is the fundamental technical ability of the individuals. If the standard of this is raised it becomes easier to coach more complex concepts within football and gives more confidence to players. The second is the soft skills that aren’t as easily viewed, this includes decision making, awareness, a football mind. These skills develop a player’s ability to read the game and keep consistency in their play. The last thing, especially at Northern Tigers, is a 100% effort policy, this is essential to create early on because as coaches we need to establish this first and foremost before anything can be achieved at a high intensity.

How important is the NSFA club and Northern Tigers FC connection?

I think it is very important for the clubs to be connected, there needs to be competition and connection because this is the driver for quality. When people become too comfortable they lose the drive for quality. This competition comes from the connection between clubs and therefore pushes players into improving consistently. Without this connection the pool of players to develop becomes limited making the quality standard remain the same. As a player myself if there is an external competition as well as an individual motivation the growth and improvement of a players is far more significant.

Player Profile: Shayna Killey

How long have you been playing for Northern Tigers?

This will be my second season with Tigers.

Who have been the been the biggest influences in your football career?

I definitely have to mention my dad. I’ve never met a more passionate person when it comes to football. He has been playing his whole life and I know I have the same love for the game as he does. Throughout my footballing career he has always supported me and pushed me to do the best I possibly can do. And of course there have been a few coaches over the years who I am so grateful for all the time and effort they have put in to help me better myself.

Which clubs have you previously played for?

I started playing quite late, when I was 12 I joined a local club near my home which was called Kellyville Kolts. From there I went to Penrith Nepean for a couple of years and then to Koalas up until I came to play for Tigers last season.

What do you enjoy most about playing for Northern Tigers?

I love the friendliness of the club, and how it feels like a family. Everyone looks out for one another and I love the positive vibes. The girls have really made my time at Tigers the best and I thank the club for playing a big part in getting my confidence and passion in playing back again. Also a big thanks to Pat and Frank for inviting me to come to Tigers last season, it was a tough decision in moving clubs but one that I have never regretted making.

What position do you play? Have you always played there?

I play as a winger and have mostly been playing on the right side throughout this season. That has always been my position or as a striker.

What is your personal goal for this season?

To be more calm in front of goal and to score. I’m confident in all other areas, especially in crossing and setting up for other players but when I get the opportunity I want to be more confident in finishing.

Do you have a favourite club/player?

I really enjoyed watching Sydney FC play in the recent season. They were very well structured, played the ball around well and looked dangerous in the final 3rd.

Also I’ve always been a big fan of Lionel Messi, his scoring abilities and footwork is incredible!

What is your best football memory?

Being the minor premiers and grand final champions back in Under 16’s for Koalas. We had a great team and coach and worked hard for each other and got amazing results because of it.

Player Profile: Aram Tayebi

How long have you been playing for Northern Tigers?

I have played for the club for a total of four years, first in 2013 and 2014. After a few years away I returned to the club last year and have continued on into this season.

Who have been the been the biggest influences in your football career?

The biggest influence would have to be my older brother. Without him I would have never started playing in the first place!

Which clubs have you previously played for?

In Australia I have played for Sutherland Sharks, Bankstown Berries, St George Saints and Parramatta FC. I have also played in Iran and the U.A.E.

What do you enjoy most about playing for Northern Tigers?

The club culture is fantastic. The players in my squad as well as the administrators and coaches are fantastic people as well as being technically proficient in the game itself.

What position do you play? Have you always played there?

I currently play anywhere down the left side, usually left wing but I have played the occasional fixture in left back. I have previously played as a 9 and 10 also.

What is your personal goal for this season?

My goal this season was to have an injury free year and start to enjoy playing again – I have barely missed a match so it’s going well so far!

Do you have a favourite club/player? Who/why?

Arsenal. When I was young they signed my favourite player, Dennis Bergkamp. I have been a fan ever since! Along with Bergkamp, his Arsenal strike partner Thierry Henry is also one of my favourite players.

What is your best football memory?

I was fortunate enough to representing Iran on an international level earlier in my career for the Under-23 team.

Player Profile: Erica Di Sciascio

Erica has cemented her place in the Women’s First Grade back four this season after making the step up from our Under 17’s squad last year!

How long have you been playing for Northern Tigers?

I have been playing at Northern Tigers for two seasons now and hopefully many more to come!

Which clubs have you played for previously?

Prior to playing at Northern Tigers, I played at Football NSW Institute for the 2016 season competing in the Reserve Grade NPL competition, before that I played at the North West Sydney Koalas for three consecutive seasons, playing in the U/13, U/14’s and U/15’s.

What do you enjoy most about playing for Northern Tigers?

Northern Tigers is the most supportive and encouraging club that I have been involved with and I think that is what I love most about it. The coaches are always willing to help and assist in any way they can which makes my job easier as a player as I am able to seek help and guidance when required.

What position do you play? Have you always played there?

I currently play right back and have been playing there for most of my football career, although last season I did play the second half of the season as striker which was something different and challenging but thoroughly enjoyed it.

What is your personal goal for this season?

My personal goal for this season was to significantly improve my ball skill and having more confidence in driving forward in attack, to become a threat to other teams and create more goal scoring opportunities. This goal is still a work in progress but I have seen a dramatic improvement in my ball skills and ability to drive forward in attack.

Do you have a favourite club/player? Why?

I do have a favourite club, and that is Tottenham Hotspur, I thoroughly enjoy watching this team play and love how threatening they can be in attack.

What is your best football memory?

I think my best football memory would be captaining the winning state titles side in 2014 with current Northern Tigers U/15 coach , Frank Warnink. This tournament was such a great and challenging experience considering we had to play against such a tough opposition and achieved great results.

Player Profile: Matt Stewart

A new addition to the Men’s First Grade squad this year, Matt Stewart has stepped up to the challenge and cemented himself in Jason Eagar’s starting lineup.

How long have you been playing for Northern Tigers?

This is my first season.

Which clubs have you previously played for?

I have previously played for Marconi, Blacktown City, Western Sydney Wanderers, APIA and Sutherland

What do you enjoy most about playing for Northern Tigers?

What I enjoy most is playing with the group of guys we have in First Grade. I have played at a lot of clubs but this is the most tight-knit and enjoyable bunch of boys to play with.

What position do you play? Have you always played there?

I play right back but I have also played centre back, left back, right wing and left wing!

What is your personal goal for this season?

My personal goal for the season is to start as many games as possible in First Grade and to play my best to help the club get promoted to NPL 1.

Do you have a favourite club/player? Who/why?

My favourite club is Liverpool and my favourite player is Steven Gerrard. The reason I support Liverpool is because the first game of football I watched was the 2005 champions league final and Steven Gerrard was one of the best players in that game.

What is your best football memory?

My best football memory was being selected in my first Joeys squad. It was a great experience and a part of my football life that I enjoyed a lot.

Men’s First Grade Mid-Season Review

FROM THE COACH – Jason Eagar

What’s been the team’s best performance (or performances) so far this season?

The best performance is still to come. To date we have not put in a complete performance for 90 minutes, we have been guilty of starting games slowly and playing catch up. I’ve been impressed by our relentless never give up attitude (Trademark #4) that has resulted in some courageous and dramatic fight backs so far this season. It is great to have that quality in the team, but it would be nice to only call on it occasionally!

What is the team’s biggest strength heading into the rest of the season?

The team has great unity and we have a lot of depth in the squad. I am confident that any player in the 1st Grade squad can do the job required when called upon, for that matter a number of the U20s and U18s could also contribute. This creates competition for places and ultimately will deliver stronger individual and team performances. We aim to make the training environment harder than match day, work harder at training than our opposition, take no short cuts.
