Weekend Review: April 7-8

Our Women’s NPL First Grade picked up their first win of the season in a closely-fought match away to Sutherland Shire Football Association. In the end goals from Shayna Killey and defender Molly Woods saw us collect the three points!

Unfortunately Reserve Grade went down 3-1, but the Under 17’s and Under 15’s picked up some impressive wins while our Under 14’s split the points.

Youth NPL came up against Western Sydney Wanderers FC on Saturday at Sydney United Sports Centre. Despite some spirited performances across the day, unfortunately the A-League academy proved too strong in all age groups.

In Men’s NPL our Under 18’s and Under 20’s continued their strong starts to the season with victories, but unfortunately First Grade could not make it a clean sweep over Parramatta FC.

Round 5 Youth NPL vs Western Sydney Wanderers – Sydney United Sports Centre

Under 15’s – 2-0 Loss

Michelle Heyman Signs On

Northern Tigers FC can today announce the signing of current Matildas striker Michelle Heyman for the remainder of the season.

Heyman is currently in Jordan with the Matildas for the AFC Women’s Asian Cup, looking to build on her record of 20 goals scored in 59 appearances.

The 29-year-old has played for Canberra United in the Westfield W-League since 2010, scoring 55 goals in 89 appearances.

“I am excited to join Tigers, looking forward to a new experience and working hard with the team” Heyman said.

Northern Tigers Technical Director Jason Eagar believes the star striker will have a key impact upon the team throughout the season.

“From a coaching perspective I’m really looking forward to working with Michelle, but as a football fan I am also looking forward to watching her play each week!” he said.

“Michelle will add a significant attacking threat to the squad once she returns from what I hope is a successful Matildas campaign at the Asian Cup.”

“To now have four capped Matildas in the Northern Tigers squad it is very exciting for the club and women’s football in NSFA.”

Heyman will join the Northern Tigers playing squad following the conclusion of the Matildas’ Asian Cup campaign.

Player Profile: Liam McConaghy

How long have you been playing for Northern Tigers?

This is my 6th season at Northern Tigers.

Which clubs have you previously played for?

I played youth football at both Parramatta and Marconi. Then I went to APIA Leichardt for a couple of seasons and I had a year playing for Sydney Uni before coming to the Tigers.

What have you enjoyed most about playing for Northern Tigers?

I really enjoy the culture at the club. There’s a real team feel here compared to other clubs I’ve been at.

What position do you play? Have you always played there?

I play up front (9) at the moment. I’ve also played a bit out wide and also played attacking mid when I was younger.

What is your personal goal for this season?

Helping to get the club promoted has definitely been my goal since I got to this club.

Scoring a few goals along the way wouldn’t hurt either!

Do you have a favourite club/player? Who/why?

Been a big Arsenal fan (unfortunately) since I can remember. Thierry Henry and the Brazilian Ronaldo were my idols growing up. Even though they’ve both retired I’d say they’re still my favourite. I still watch there goal compilations when I’m bored.

What is your best football memory?

There’s been so many since I started playing that’s why I love the game, but I’d say winning the grand final with the Tigers a couple of seasons ago would be my favourite football memory. Nothing better then lifting a trophy after a long hard fought season.

Ellie Brush Joins Tigers

Northern Tigers FC are excited to announce the signing of Ellie Brush for the 2018 Women’s NPL season.

Brush played for Western Sydney Wanderers in the most recent season of the Westfield W-League and also featured for GWS Giants in the Women’s AFL.

The 29-year-old spent the majority of her playing career at Canberra United, winning two premierships and two championships as club captain.

Northern Tigers Technical Director Jason Eagar is looking forward to Brush’s debut as a Tigers player.

“Ellie will bring additional quality, experience, and leadership to the women’s squad. Her contribution both on and off the field will be invaluable for the club’s young aspiring players.”

“Having players of the calibre of Servet Uzunlar, Eliza Campbell and now Ellie Brush representing Northern Tigers provides a great opportunity for young girls in the NSFA to experience the best of women’s football in their own backyard.”

Brush joins the Northern Tigers squad for training this week and is expected to make her debut in the coming weeks.

Friday was certainly a good day for our Men’s NPL players, picking up 21 club championship points in a hard-fought set of matches against our neighbours Spirit FC.

Our Youth NPL endured some tough conditions during the day but showed great perseverance to come away with a positive record across four matches against Canterbury Bankstown FC.

Weekend Review: March 24-25

Saturday was a tough experience for our Men’s NPL 2 teams against the Central Coast Mariners Academy at NTRA, yielding only a point across the three grades. The focus now shifts to Good Friday’s matches against Spirit FC to return to the winners’ circle.

Youth NPL enjoyed a largely successful Sunday against Hills United Football Club, with the Under 13’s producing their first win of the season in an impressive show of perseverance!

Our Women’s NPL teams made the trip out to Macarthur Rams, picking up good wins in both Under 15’s and Reserve Grade. Against a First Grade team full of W-League stars the team produced a great start to take the lead before eventually being overcome by last season’s grand finalists.

Player Profile: Joel Hardwick

How long have you been playing for Northern Tigers?

I’m in first grade for my third year now. In my youth I was here from U13’s until second year of U/18’s.

Which clubs have you previously played for?

I have also played for Blacktown City, Central coast (many different names over the years), Lake Macquarie FC, and Weston FC for first grade. In my youth I also played for APIA Leichardt Tigers.

What have you enjoyed most about playing for Northern Tigers?

The team culture is excellent, the coaching is always a high standard, and the youth development has improved incredibly since I first started in U13’s.

What position do you play? Have you always played there?

I mainly play central midfield (number 6), but previously have played every possible position except goalkeeper. In my youth I was a central midfielder, winger, or right or left back.

What is your personal goal for this season?

To be as consistent as possible so the team can win the the double.

Do you have a favourite club/player? Who/why?

I go for Newcastle United in the EPL. Why, because I was just drawn to them when I was younger and they were not a popular team like Manchester United or Liverpool. My favourite player was not always the best (like Messi) and was not a big trophy winner. He was my favourite because of his impact on the team, Steven Gerrard. No one can beat his tenacity. I would like to also add Jamie Craig as one of my favourites because he is just so confident in himself!

What is your best football memory?

Well my best memory was winning U18’s at Northern Tigers. It was the second grand final win I had been involved with at the club and it was with a great coach and great team.

Coach Profile: Raphael Blanchon

This week we spoke to coach Raphael Blanchon. The Frenchman is taking charge of three teams this season across our Youth NPL, Northern Lions SAP and Northern Tigers Girls SAP!

How did you first get involved in football?

I don’t remember when I first played or liked football. I used to go to the park to kick the ball with my father when I was very young. I started to play club football with Nantes Sud 98, U6 age group, (local club in Nantes, France). I don’t remember how but I played goalkeeper very early in the season and never moved from that position during 12 years. Besides club football, I always played with friends before, during and after school, always as an outfield player. In 1998 (I was 8), the World Cup in France (and the win!) helped to maintain and increase my passion for the game, as well as the success of FC Nantes between 1994 and 2001 (2 French league titles, 2 French cups).

How did you first get involved with Northern Tigers?

I arrived in Australia in October 2016 to participate in a coaching course in Canberra. The instructor advised me to go to Sydney to look for a coaching position. I quickly got a trial in NSFA Football School and it started from there. Thanks to NSFA/Nothern Tigers, I had the opportunity to coach the Northern Lions U9’s and AYL U13’s during the 2017 season. I was also involved in XLR8 program with Bannockburn FC, Hornsby RSL, Waitara Primary School and during the holidays clinics. This year I am coaching the Northern Tigers U16’s, Girls SAP U13’s and Northern Lions U10’s, while still doing coaching with XLR8 as well.

Which clubs have you previously been involved with?

I’ve played 11 years for Nantes Sud 98 where I had my best memories as a player. I also played for FC REZE, another club in Nantes area., but only for a year As a coach, I spent two years (2013-2014) with BRAS FC, a local team in Nseke, Katanga, Democratic Republic of Congo.

What do you like most about Northern Tigers as a club?

I like the atmosphere and the culture in and around the club. Everyone I’ve met has been very nice to me. A good example is the relationship between coaches. We all work for a common interest (developing players). We share opinions and ideas to try to get better every day. The club do everything to put coaches in the best conditions. It allows us to be focused only on training sessions, games and players, which is a luxury for us.

How would you describe your coaching philosophy?

I believe that my main mission is to set up an environment where players can give their best during training and games. I try to implement a desire to play football based on possession and movement with a strong team unit. I believe that it is the best way to have more goal scoring chances than the opposition. It is more enjoyable for the players to play and for the crowd watching the games. Football is also entertainment and can be very emotional for all parties, whether you are playing a lunch game at primary school or the World Cup final. Aside from the technical aspect, mental strength can be developed in SAP and Youth teams. A good control of emotions and understanding of others helps a football player to make the right decision at the right moment.

What is your best football memory?

It is very hard to choose one, as a player, coach or as a fan. The most intense moments might be linked to the French national team, with the double World Cup 1998 & Euro 2000 and the win over Brazil in the 2006 World Cup as my top three.

Do you have a favourite club / player? Who/why?

As I mentioned above my favourite club is FC Nantes, North-West of France. The club won the league 8 times plus 3 French cups with a spectacular playing style, players and coaches developed in the academy.

My favourite player is Zidane, obvious isn’t it?

What do you enjoy the most about being involved in football?

I enjoy everything I do when I am involved in football.

Player Profile: Jordan Ferrier

How long have you been playing for Northern Tigers?

I have just started my second season for Tigers.

Which clubs have you previously played for?

I played one year for Dee Why FC when I first arrived in Australia, and after one season there, I signed for the Tigers.

What have you enjoyed most about playing for Northern Tigers?

What I love at the Tigers is the atmosphere, it’s very familial and no one pretends to be superior than the club.

What position do you play? Have you always played there?

I play centre back. I’ve played that position for a long time, but I started as right back when I was younger.

What is your personal goal for this season?

My target this year it’s to finish top scorer! No, to be honest I want to win the championship and go to NPL1.

Do you have a favourite club/player? Who/why?

My favourite club is Marseille in France, and my favourite player is Zidane!

What is your best football memory?

My best football memory was the mini football World Cup last year in Tunisia (October), it was an amazing experience to travel to represent Australia, we lost in quarterfinal against Spain!

The Northern Tigers Men square off against the Central Coast Mariners Academy this Saturday at North Turramurra Recreation Area. Come down to the ground a support for the players as they look for a third straight win at home!

Kick-off times: Under 18’s – 3pm, Under 20’s – 5pm, First Grade – 7pm.

Weekend Review: March 17-18

Our Men’s NPL 2 players continued their strong start to the season with some impressive results against Macarthur Rams at NTRA on Saturday night.

With the gauntlet laid down by the Youth NPL Under 16’s last week after an 8-0 win, the Under 18’s put on a show, scoring ELEVEN (yes, you read that right!) on their way to three points. Under 20’s found their opposition a little more resilient, finishing locked at one goal apiece.

The main event for the day saw the Men’s First Grade secure back-to-back wins with a 4-2 scoreline, courtesy of a brace from Liam McConaghy and goals to Jordan Ferrier and Rory Spiers.

Youth NPL endured some tough results against St George Saints Football Club, starting off with two losses before the Under 15’s secured a point in a spirited performance featuring several Under 14’s players backing up after their match. The Under 16’s were locked at one goal apiece at half time in their match before the heat forced the officials to abandon the game.

The continuing heatwave on Sunday unfortunately forced the cancellation of all Women’s NPL fixtures against Blacktown Spartans Football Club.

FULL RESULTS AND SCORERS:

Youth NPL vs St George FC – NTRA

Under 16’s – Match Abandoned
Under 15’s – 0-0 Draw

Vale Ash Grant

The club would like to pay its respects to former coach Ash Grant, who unfortunately passed away yesterday.

Ash was our boys Under 13’s coach in 2014, with a few of our current U18 players in that team.

He was a very genuine, honest, down to earth character and well-liked and respected by all. While he coached the 13’s, he also gave us invaluable support at the time in maintaining Mills Park, providing his expertise as a professional groundsman.

He was only at the club for one season as travelling from the coast it was difficult for him to balance his work, family, and Terrigal United Football Club coaching commitments. However he left a great impression on anyone at the club fortunate enough to cross paths with him during his time.

His passing is greatly mourned by our club’s members and we extend our condolences and support to Ash’s family. Rest in Peace Ash.

Weekend Review: March 10-11

Saturday night at NTRA was a clean sweep for our Men’s NPL teams against Blacktown Spartans, racking up 13 goals and keeping three clean sheets – a well-deserved 21 points for the club championship!

Sunday saw our Women’s NPL teams kick off their opposition against perennial title contenders Sydney University. It was tough going in First Grade against a host of W-League stars, but there were some strong performances in the younger age groups.

Our Youth NPL players travelled out to Melita Stadium to take on Parramatta FC. Aside from a narrow loss in the morning it was happy hunting for our Tigers, with the 16’s finishing off the day in style with eight goals!

Coach Profile: Irini Kacopieros

This week we spoke to Under 11 Girls SAP coach Irini Kacopieros. Having served the club as both a player and a coach, Irini is the embodiment of Northern Tigers FC, committed to developing players and building a positive environment both on and off the field!

How did you first get involved in football?

Growing up with my big Greek-Cypriot family, all the boys used to play football at every family gathering and I loved to join in. I wanted to get involved in primary school at lunchtimes, however the boys didn’t allow the girls to play, allowing only myself and a few others who were more athletic to join in. I remember complaining to my school and we managed to get Fridays to be girls only on the football field, and boys were allowed to play at our invitation. It was definitely a step in the right direction!

How did you first get involved with Northern Tigers?

I was born in Sydney, but my family moved to South Australia when I was 14 years old.  When we moved back 10 years later, my youngest sister and I had been playing Premier League in SA for 4 years, and naturally we wanted to continue playing.  I looked up a few PL clubs in NSW that were close to me, and when we trialled for Northern Tigers, my sister and I were treated like players rather than just another number. I played in the Women’s First and Reserve grade teams for 5 years, during which we earned promotion to WPL1.

After playing for one year, I began coaching in a male-dominated arena at Northern Tigers, becoming the only female coach at the time and then formed and coach the club’s first Girls U11 Development squad in 2011.  We ran this program for 5 years, with the change in age groups at rep level shifting us to U12 in 2014.  The girls played in the NSFA boys competition each year, where they regularly made opposition parents and coaches fall in love with their possession style football, teamwork and skill.

With the introduction of Girls SAP in 2016, I obtained my AFC C Licence, and have since been coaching our Northern Tigers Girls SAP players.  I am proud to look at our female youth teams, from U14 up to U17, which contain a large number of players who went through our development program and are continuing to excel on the football field.

Which clubs have you previously been involved with?

I played for 10 years at rep level:

  • Para Hills Knights – S.A. (4 years)
  • Northern Tigers – NSW (5 years)
  • UNSW (1 year)

I now play in my local Division 1 competition just for fun and fitness (need to fit into my wedding dress in September!)

What do you like most about Northern Tigers as a club?

The family culture at this club is awesome.  Even now that I no longer play, I am still amazed at how many players and parents I see around that are still involved with the club 8 years on. This level of loyalty comes from people being happy with the club culture and environment, and I feel Northern Tigers is a fantastic club to coach and play for.  As most people know, I work out near Parramatta and I live in the north-west, however I have made the commitment both as a player and as a coach to stay at Northern Tigers regardless of the travel.

How would you describe your coaching philosophy?

I love my teams to play possession-based football and to develop players who work hard both individually and for their team.  I also try to create an environment where underlying lessons about friendship, teamwork and good sportsmanship are nurtured and practiced regularly (must be the teacher in me!)

What position did you/do you play?

Although I have played every position at some point, I am a left back (#5) although my preferred foot is my right. I identified early on that no one wanted to play on the left, so I put my hand up, worked on my left foot and haven’t looked back!

What is your best football memory?’

Watching the Socceroos qualify for the 2006 Men’s World Cup: I remember my entire family sitting around the couch (including my other sister who has absolutely zero interest in football), all holding our breath when John Aloisi stepped up to take that penalty. That was a fantastic night for football in Australia.

Do you have a favourite club/player? Who/why?

I am a massive Adelaide United fan, becoming a member from the first season of the A-League when we lived in S.A and continuing to follow our team even after we moved back to Sydney. My mum and I travel to all the NSW games when they play, and we schedule our plans around their games so we can cheer on the boys every weekend.

I am a major fan of Elise Kellond-Knight, who is also a traditional left back and plays for the Matildas.  She is a fantastic player for our national team, and I admire that she has played regularly in Germany’s Bundesliga, making a career out of her football. She is definitely a great role model for all my future little Matildas.

What do you enjoy the most about being involved in football?

I love the team environment. Being part of a team is something every kid should experience, as it teaches them valuable life lessons.

How has football changed for women/girls during your time in the game?

With the introduction of the Girls Diamond League in recent years, as well as the rise of the Matildas internationally and in the W-League, I feel that females have so many more opportunities and examples to look up to, and I am proud to have been a part of the journey.

The last few years football for females has come along in leaps and bounds, and I look forward to what the future might hold.

Weekend Review: March 4

Our Men’s First Grade showed great fighting spirit to secure a point against Mounties, scoring a late equaliser in a six-goal thriller. The Under 20’s made an emphatic start in their league title defence, while the Under 18’s were edged in an entertaining contest.

Women’s NPL made the most of their final pre-season fixtures, securing a clean sweep against Central Coast Mariners at NTRA and scoring 23 goals across five matches!

It was a mixed bag of results for our Youth NPL players against St George City at Charles Bean Oval, starting and finishing the day with defeats but picking up wins in the Under 14’s and Under 15’s.

Men’s NPL 2 vs Mounties Wanderers
Round 1, Sydney United Sports Centre
