2017 SAP Presentation Day

On Saturday we hosted all players from the three SAP licences – Northern Tigers SAP, NSFA Lions SAP, Northern Tigers GSAP – for our presentation day at NTRA.

The afternoon kicked off with a combined mini World Cup.  The Under 9/10 age groups and U11/12 age groups combined and formed mixed teams from all three licences for some friendly competition!

Second on the agenda was the crossbar challenge. All players (and coaches) had a shot at being crowned their squad and age group champion. All champions then went into the finale, playing in front of all 180 SAP players and parents.

After the crossbar challenge was the ‘SAP sprint’, with each squad nominating two players to represent them. The sprint occurred across the field with SAP players lining the finish line. Ashton Cox of Tigers Under 10’s won the race, however special mention must go to coach Marc Messina for giving it a red hot go!

The day was wrapped up with individual team presentations, handing out trophies and team photos.

It was great to see all of our SAP players come together in a day filled with fun, friendship, and most importantly, football!

2017 Women’s Presentation Night

All the teams from Northern Tigers Women’s NPL got together on Friday night for the annual presentation night, featuring the iconic lip sync competition!

This year saw the Junior Player of the Year award renamed after Pat O’Sullivan in recognition of his service to the club as a coach from Under 12’s through to First Grade over the past six years.

Our Men’s NPL Under-20’s made it 13 wins in a row on Sunday thanks to a 5-1 win over Marconi on Sunday afternoon. First Grade suffered a loss against the league champions, while our 18’s continued to hold their position in the top four with a one-all draw.

Youth NPL made an undefeated trip out to Parramatta on Saturday, picking up wins in the 13’s and 14’s and draws in the 15’s and 16’s. Congrats to Will DiMartino, scoring twice for the 16’s on Saturday before scoring for the 18’s on Sunday as well. 15 year-old goalkeeper Lachlan Wheeler also made the step up to Under-18’s and performed well.

AYL endured a tough weekend against St George FA, but are still well-placed heading into the final rounds of the season.

From Northern Tigers to a Professional English Contract – The Cameron Leverton Story

We recently caught up with SAP and NSFA graduate Cameron Leverton and his father Giles to discuss his transition from the Northern Tigers to the Hull City Tigers Under 13’s Academy.

Hi Cameron. Great to speak to you again. We hear that you have just been re-signed for Hull, congratulations. What will a typical week look like for you in 2017/18?

Cameron:

Monday: 90 minutes skills and 60 minutes gym strengthening work.

Tuesday: 9am to 5pm Day release. Mixture of lessons & football training. NO SCHOOL!!!

Wednesday: Bio Banding. 120 mins training with any age group, but with boys that are same size & build.

Saturday: Training 12pm to 2pm then match review 60 minutes. Every fourth week, we have a mixed tournament with 13’s/ 14’s/15’s

Sunday: Match Day. With Travelling / warm up / match reviews, this is usually a full day.

How does the competition work? Do you get to play against EPL academy teams?

Cameron: Hull are part of FA Category 2. I think you get put into Categories depending how much you invest in the Academy. Hull moved from Category 3 to Category 2 the year I started, so went from playing Division 3 teams to Premier league teams. We did not win many matches that year.

Now we play Category 1 and 2 Academies through the season, which are within a 2 hour travelling distance. These teams include Manchester City / Derby / Sheffield Wednesday & United / Sunderland / Middlesbrough / Barnsley / Leeds / Huddersfield / Newcastle / Bolton.

We also play a number of Tournaments through the season, so have also played Liverpool and Manchester United this year.

Cameron in action for Northern Tigers.

Does Hull’s relegation have any impact on youth football?

Giles: Nothing changed when Hull were promoted, so nothing will change now Hull have been relegated.

A lot of the first team have been sold, which has meant a number of the Under 23’s have moved up into the first team. This has had a chain reaction on the other age groups, as gaps appear in the 23’s / 18’s / 16’s. This then gives players the opportunity to play up in the year above. Cameron was lucky enough to play up a year a few times last year, which was fantastic, so he hopes this will happen again.

The new Hull Manager is the ex-Russian National Manager, so we are hoping he will be able to take the club straight back up to the Premier League.

How do you fit in all your homework?

Cameron: I know if I don’t get my homework done, then I will get in trouble at home & school, so I have to do it at school or during my night off.

Now we have started the ‘Day Release’, the club are getting much more involved in our progress at school. Hull have an Education Manager, who liaise with the schools, and track our Learning Cycle results. If I fall behind, or my results start going backward, then they can remove me from the Day Release.

The School have been really supportive, and my Year Head has a son who has been through the Leeds United Academy, and has now signed a professional contract, so he understands what a great opportunity this is.

What’s been the best part about playing at this level?

Cameron: It was originally really hard to fit in, as all the team had been at the Academy for three years, so I was the outsider.

I just focus on what the coaches are telling me at each review and training session, and try hard to get better. I got told my attitude and focus has been the main reason why I get selected to play up a year.

I love playing football against different teams, and travelling to play at different Academies. I also like getting positive feedback from the coaches, which makes all the hard work worthwhile.

My favourite match was against Manchester City. They have spent £250m on their academy, so have 8 full size synthetic pitches, 3 Full size Grass Pictures, 3 full size indoor pitches, 20’000 seater stadium, with Canteen and schooling facilities.
When we played there last time, they had just signed someone our age from Everton for £50k. No wonder we lost 13:0.

I also love going on tours & playing tournaments. Travelling with all my friends in the big club bus, staying away in nice hotels without mum & dad, flying to Europe is really exciting.

What role did Northern Tigers play in your development?

Cameron: I would never be doing what I am today if I had not got a good grounding at the Northern Tigers.

Dad did his best coaching me at Mount Colah in our first year in Australia, but getting selected for the Northern Tigers took the training and coaching to a different level.

The SAP structure, regular training sessions and playing the best teams in Sydney really helped me improve through my 2 years.

How would you compare the standard of the FNSW SAP program to the setup at Hull. What are the main similarities / differences?

Cameron: I think it is much tougher at the Hull Academy, as there is much more competition to get in, and you are more likely to get released if you do not develop in line with expectations. I had a two week unofficial trial, then a six week official trial, before I got signed.

We have reviews every six weeks with three coaches, where we are told what we have done well, and what we need to improve on before the next review.

You can also get released at Christmas and at the end of the season. This year, eight players from the 14’s squad were released, so I do get very nervous at my reviews.

The club have to follow a very structured FA programme, which they get monitored on through the season. I am not sure of all the details.

Hull also have a very good physio set up, and are very strict with injuries. I had Achilles Tendinopathy in January, and they stopped me playing for eight weeks. During that time, I had to go for regular treatment, and then be rehabilitated, and was not allowed to go back training until the Physio signed me off.

Ok Giles, Cameron was also heavily involved in Athletics when he lived in Sydney. Do you think this helped his development?

Giles: 100% helped him get where he is today. He gets measured twice a year on his fitness etc., and has been told his speed is a year ahead, and jumping is two years ahead of his age.

Athletics over here is appalling, and he has almost done nothing since he left Australia, which is really disappointing.

You are very lucky to have the Little A’s set up, and I would encourage any players to do it to balance out the intense football training. Hull encourage the boys to do other sports to build up other muscles, not just “football ones”.

Apart from Hull which English team would you most like to play for?

Cameron: My dream would be to play for Manchester City, but they never seem to have any English players in the 1st team.

We keep getting told now that if we want a contract in four years, then it is for us to prove we deserve it. I really hope this happens, but I know it will be really hard work to keep up all the school work and training.

I would love to come back to Australia on tour one day, and see the new club and pitches you have built, and see everyone again, or perhaps everyone could come over and see me.

Thanks Cameron. Everyone at Northern Tigers has fond memories of your family and of course watching you play. It is no surprise that your attitude is what sets you apart from other players. You were hard-working, humble and always put the team above your own performance.

Congratulations once again and we all look forward to seeing you continue to enjoy your football, and maybe one day take your place on the big stage.

2018 SAP Selection Process

Please note: This information only applies to the SAP programs. Girls SAP covers different age groups and will utilise a slightly different selection process that is currently being finalised.

Northern Tigers and NSFA will continue to manage two Skill Acquisition Program (SAP) licences in 2018.

The selection process for the 2018 season will change from the Trial Day/s process conducted in previous years. The one off trial day/window process makes informed decisions difficult when taking into account our philosophy of long-term player development. Some issues with the trial day/window process include:

  1. Players can miss attending the trial window due to sickness, injury, holiday, other sport commitments, not being aware they are on.
  2. Players unfamiliar with the process of a selection trial may become nervous, conservative, and not perform to their potential in a one off trial scenario
  3. Due to the volume of players attending the trials and the limited time to conduct the trial; the process does not allow for a thorough assessment of a player’s potential
  4. The assessment of players can only be limited to technical skills – important attributes related to attitude and the capability to develop in the long-term cannot be assessed
  5. The process can be stressful for players and parents

Changes made for 2018

  • The process will stretch over a number of months in 2017 (observe more players, multiple times, in different environments)
  • Gaining input from a number of different stakeholders (to reach more players and provide a more holistic assessment of each player)
  • Take into consideration as many players as possible born between 2006 and 2009
  • Players are identified and assessed in a number of different ways throughout the 2017 season:
  1. NSFA representatives attend local NSFA games to observe players participating in a familiar environment. Players are identified and invited to multiple sessions to be assessed by SAP coaches.
  2. NSFA identify high performing community teams and invite them to ‘SAP Experience’ training sessions to be assessed by SAP coaches.
  3. NSFA request clubs to identify potentially talented players at their club against a set of criteria. These players are invited to multiple sessions to be assessed by SAP coaches.
  4. Players identified at NSFA Football School/Holiday Clinics programs are invited to multiple sessions to be assessed by SAP coaches.
  5. Players can express an interest in trialling for SAP via the NSFA/Northern Tigers website – NSFA representatives then seek out more information from the players’ club and possibly invite them to attend some sessions to be assessed by SAP coaches.
  6. Existing SAP players are continually assessed during the season, including two formal assessments.

Selection Process Timeline for 2018

June to August 2017Identify players in community football who are currently not playing SAP
August 2017Seek expressions of interest from existing SAP players for 2018
August 2017Invite identified community players and existing SAP players to 5 weeks of SAP Games in August/September 2017 for further assessment.

Player Interview: Servet Uzunlar

Servet (pictured left) has a glittering CV, being capped 48 times for the Matildas and playing for both Sydney FC and Western Sydney Wanderers in the W-League.

The 28-year-old defender has joined Northern Tigers Women for the remainder of the season. We caught up with Servet to talk to her about her football career and experiences.

How did you first start playing football?

I was the youngest of five siblings, and as a young kid I idolised my brother above me, basically whatever he was doing I just wanted to do. If he was skateboarding I wanted to skateboard, when he started playing football I wanted to play. I lived across the road from a football oval, where my parents still live today, so it was super easy to get involved. When I turned five my mum registered me and I just started playing.

How did you get into the more serious side of football?

I started playing at five and I was one of two girls in the team. I really enjoyed it, I was rather good and I loved playing, so when I was ten I tried out for the Sutherland Sharks rep team. That was mixed but I got in, I was the only girl in that team and basically the whole tournament. I continued playing in that team for under 11s and 12s and I was also starting regularly and word got around I guess, so I got scouted from there to be honest, at age twelve. From there I was put into the pathways as I got older into the Young Matildas and eventually Matildas. I guess Under 11’s, under 12’s was that turning point where I realised I was good enough to make teams and hold my own against the boys.

What is your most memorable football experience?

There’s two that I cannot separate. First was winning the Asian Cup in 2010, that was the first major tournament that the Matildas had ever won. To go to massive tournaments is an achievement in itself but then to win one was massive. It was also my first major tournament so that was amazing. It was in China and we won the final on penalties against North Korea, that was the best feeling I’d ever felt.

From the Asian Cup we qualified for the World Cup in Germany in 2011. Playing in a World Cup is any footballer’s dream, it’s the biggest stage. It was an honour and all my family and siblings came over to watch, so just walking out in front of them and having them there was just fantastic.

How are you enjoying your time with Northern Tigers?

The girls are great, I came to training and it was like I’d been there all season, I felt comfortable and a real part of the team. I knew Heidi (Makrillos) as a familiar face (playing W-League together for Sydney FC) but I’d also played with Jayde and Shayna as well so it was nice to see them there. It’s been fantastic, the club’s wonderful, the coach is great and I really enjoyed my time on the pitch on Sunday.

Japan Beckons for Young Tigers

At the recent Yokohama F Marinos FC clinic hosted by NSFA, two Northern Tigers players were identified by J-League academy coach Erabu Mochizuki and invited to train with the club’s academy in Japan.

Max Ogawa (NPL Youth U15s) and Pratik Napit (NPL Youth U16s) were observed by the elite Japanese coaches during the three-day clinic held at North Turramurra Recreation Area.

Northern Tigers Technical Director Jason Eagar welcomed the development opportunity for both players.

“Coach Mochizuki identified Max and Pratik as having the required attitude and technical skills to potentially be successful in Japan,” he said.

“It’s an amazing chance for the boys to test themselves against elite players in Japan.”

Congratulations to both players on their achievement!

Men’s NPL 2: Tigers Share Points with Mariners

A four-goal second half saw Northern Tigers and Central Coast Mariners share the points in a thrilling 2-2 draw at NTRA on Saturday night in the NPL NSW Men’s 2 First Grade.

A tense opening to the match was quickly forgotten in the second 45, as Tigers went two in front thanks to goals from Michael Rolston and Jordan Smylie, only for the Mariners to score two late goals and salvage a result.

The Mariners started the match with intent, but a great cover challenge from Rolston and a fine save by Harrison Devenish-Meares saw Mariners striker Brenton Fox denied on two separate occasions.

Midfielder Joel Hardwick was looking dangerous for Tigers, driving down the right channel before delivering a dangerous low cross into the area, but Central Coast keeper Adam Pearce showed great reactions to prevent the ball finding Smylie in the box.

As the half wore on Mark McCormick’s Tigers seized greater control of the match, with Alexander Brown, Lachlan Hughes and Hardwick looking good down the right side. However, the final ball was still missing as both sides went into the break scoreless.

The second half began almost perfectly for Tigers, finding themselves in front as Rolston converted a penalty won by central defender Paul Turrin after a slaloming run through the heart of the Mariners midfield.

Just minutes later it was two. Hardwick’s defence-splitting pass found Smylie in the box, and the 17-year-old produced a clinical finish to double his side’s lead. The youngster was creating a myriad of problems for the opposition, and was rewarded with a penalty for his persistence in the box near the hour mark. However, the ensuing spot-kick brought the teenager back to earth as Pearce made a strong save to his right to give his side a fighting chance.

The Mariners duly capitalised on this lifeline, with substitute Peter Kekeris adding plenty of skill and drive to the left flank. Fox tested Devenish-Meares with a well-struck free-kick, and a low drive from captain Lachlan Wales seemed destined for the net until the Tigers keeper intervened once again.

McCormick added Max Glanville to the attack to try and reignite play in the final third. The number eight combined well with Smylie, but unfortunately the striker could only hit the side netting from a narrow angle.

The Mariners pulled one back in the 86th minute, as a fine run from Kekeris was completed by a composed finish from Thomas Lyons. Ben Cahn’s side then found an equaliser in stoppage time in a mirror-image of their first goal, as a run down the right flank then saw Yerasimakis Petratos calmly put the ball into the back of the net.

The result sees Tigers drop to third on the NPL 2 First Grade table behind St George Saints, while Central Coast remain in fourth just two points adrift.

Adam Hett looks to new future with Tigers

He may have had his playing career cut short by injuries, but Adam Hett (pictured top right) has reignited his passion for football as a coach, taking charge of the Northern Tigers Under-16’s this season in the NPL Youth NSW.

After spending time in England in Coventry City’s academy and reserves, Adam looked to have made his break into professional football in Australia as the winner of the first season of Foxtel’s Football Superstar program.

Given a National Youth League contract with Sydney FC, Adam’s hopes of playing for the Sky Blues suffered a blow just three days before his firs team debut, rupturing his anterior cruciate ligament and subsequently missing the entire season.

Unfortunately, that injury was the first setback of many as Adam looked to return to regular football.

“I came back in the second season and I started to have hip issues,” he explained.

“I had an operation on my hips where they trimmed the top of the femur and some cartilage in the joint itself.”

“By the time I came back I was too old for the National Youth League so I was released from Sydney FC.”

After playing briefly with Spirit FC, Hett made his way to Northern Tigers but after two seasons the then 23-year-old was forced to hang up his boots.

“After that second season I started to get chronic groin pain and osteitis (bone inflammation),” Adam said.

“When I went back in for scans, it showed that I had little to no cartilage in my hips and I’d developed osteoarthritis in the joints.”

“I was basically told if I didn’t stop playing I would need hip replacements by the time I was thirty, so I had to give it away.”

It was a bitter pill to swallow for Adam, who took a step back from the game in order to refocus.

“I had a couple of years off and it allowed me to separate playing from coaching and accept the fact that I couldn’t play anymore,” he said.

“I then decided to get back into coaching and took up a position at Lindfield FC, to make sure I enjoyed it before pursuing things further.”

“I really enjoyed it there and Jason Eagar (Northern Tigers Technical Director) knew I was back coaching so at the end of the season he asked me if I wanted to come back to Tigers, so I took on the under-16’s position.”

With his passion for the game now renewed, Adam is looking ahead to a new future as a coach.

“It’s definitely something that I really enjoy and I enjoy being back around football,” he said.

“I suppose I’m at an advantage now where I’ve got a good grounding in my experience as a player within professional clubs, but because I’m young I’ve got a head start on other coaches.”

“Football’s my passion, if I can make a career out of it and coach full-time I’d love to get to that point.”
