Weekend Review: June 2-3

Men’s NPL were the only teams at home this weekend, hosting Mounties Wanderers FC at NTRA on Saturday night. After two impressive wins in the 18’s and 20’s, First Grade started with intent, taking the lead through captain Mike Rolston from the penalty spot. However the visitors responded well and scored twice to take the lead. A strong second half from the Tigers men saw Liam McConaghy grab the equaliser in his 100th First Grade appearance, but despite plenty of pressure on goal in the closing stages a winner was not forthcoming.

Youth NPL endured a long trip south on Saturday morning to face Wollongong Wolves Football Club at Albert Butler Park. Three 2-0 losses provided little consolation in the cold weather, but the Under 15’s turned up the heat and secured an emphatic 7-2 win!

On Sunday our Women’s NPL travelled to Blacktown Football Park to face Blacktown Spartans Football Club in a key clash for each club’s finals ambitions. Unfortunately it was a tough day at the office for our players, picking up just the one draw across all five matches.

Round 14 Men’s NPL 2 vs Mounties Wanderers – NTRA

First Grade – 2-2 Draw (Michael Rolston, Liam McConaghy)
Under 20’s – 4-2 Win (Chris Chung, Nick Fitzgerald, Lachland Lloyd, Oscar Nieto)
Under 18’s – 4-0 Win (Jeremy Vaz x3, Own Goal)c

Round 13 Youth NPL vs Wollongong Wolves – Albert Butler Park

Under 16’s – 2-0 Loss
Under 15’s – 7-2 Win (Kealey Adamson, Harry Nicholas, Sam Parry, Adam Waite, Josh Sneddon, Ethan Lush, Lachlan Hui)
Under 14’s – 2-0 Loss
Under 13’s – 2-0 Loss

Round 13 Women’s NPL vs Blacktown Spartans – Blacktown Football Park

First Grade – 3-1 Loss (Jade Booty)
Reserves – 1-1 Draw (Eilidh Mackay)
Under 17’s – 5-0 Loss
Under 15’s – 2-1 Loss (Jessica Forster)
Under 14’s – 2-1 Loss (Monique Hore)

Player Profile: Luke Dawson

How long have you been playing for Northern Tigers?

I have been playing with Northern Tigers since 2010 but had a break and returned to my club team Kissing Point in 2012 and returned back to Tigers in 2014.

Which clubs have you previously played for?

Bannockburn Rovers (NSW), Commera FC (QLD), Runaway FC (QLD),Kissing Point FC (NSW)

What do you enjoy most about playing for Northern Tigers?

The thing I enjoy most about playing for Northern Tigers is the team culture we have. Our first grade team has always had good mix of personalities and I have made some life long friends.

What position do you play? Have you always played there?

I play 8 or 10. I have had a stint at right wing back but I would rather not talk about it!

What is your personal goal for this season?

My personal goal for this season is to make a positive difference to the team every time I’m on the pitch.

Do you have a favourite club/player? Who/why?

I’m a Manchester United supporter and my all time favourite player would have to be Paul Scholes. A player who was a genius on the pitch, unbelievable vision and scored some absolute bangers!

What is your best football memory?

My best footballing memory was winning the 2015 Grand final with Northern Tigers. We had a talented team that complimented each other all over the park. When that final whistle went it was a moment of pure joy and relief. Winning against a quality Bankstown City team and scoring some quality goals made it a special moment.

Player Profile: Georgia Goulding

How long have you been playing for Northern Tigers?

This is my second season with Tigers.

Which clubs have you previously played for?

Too many to count. UNSW has been the only other club that I have played for in Australia.. and then I have played for a number of clubs in New Zealand.

What do you enjoy most about playing for Northern Tigers?

Without a doubt, the people.

What position do you play? Have you always played there?

At Tigers I mostly play number 9 – depending on the day, and Richie’s mood!

What is your personal goal for this season?

Way too many to list. Probably a big one would be to get Michelle (Heyman) to sign my scrapbook….

Do you have a favourite club/player? Who/why?

Tobin Heath. She has it all.

What is your best football memory?

Being mistaken for Servet (Uzunlar)… I will never get sick of it! On that, and slightly related, I think Servet’s photo featured in our family Christmas letter last year.

Our Men’s NPL made a happy return to NTRA on Saturday night, with Liam McConaghy’s hat-trick steering First Grade to a 3-1 win over Rydalmere!

Youth NPL were in action on Saturday morning against North Shore Mariners, kicking off the morning with a loss in the Under 13’s before following up with a win and two draws in the older age groups.

On Sunday our Women’s NPL hosted Sydney University, kicking off the morning with a great 2-0 win in the Under 14’s, before our 15’s unfortunately went down 3-2 in a thrilling contest. However the visitors proved too strong in the older age groups with three wins.

Weekend Review: May 19-20

A late equaliser from John ‘Mo’ Bachelard in First Grade saw our Men’s NPL secure a hard-earned point against Hills United on Saturday night. Wins in 18’s and 20’s once again means that we’re third in the club championship, still within striking distance of the CCM Academy at the top.
It was a tough weekend away for our Youth NPL players against Sutherland Sharks, the focus now switches to this weekend’s fixtures against North Shore Mariners.
Our Women’s NPL made the trip south to face Illawarra Stingrays at JJ Kelly Park, finishing the day with wins in Reserve Grade and Under 15’s and three losses.
Michelle Heyman scored her first goal in Tigers colours in First Grade, but the home side were able to secure the points after leading 2-0 at half time.

How long have you been playing for Northern Tigers?

Right now I’ve been playing for Tigers for just over 1 year, but l first signed for the club at Under 15’s for about half a season.

Which clubs have you previously played for?

Manly United – 2008-2015
APIA Leichhardt – 2015-2016

Tallinn Levadia FC – 2013

What do you enjoy most about playing for Northern Tigers?

Northern Tigers has a great family feel, everyone is mates and looks out for each other, no one is too big for their boots, except for Jamie Craig he’s always got something to say!

What position do you play? Have you always played there?

Goalkeeper/striker – I’m pretty handy up front and a great finisher!

What is your personal goal for this season?

My personal goal of the year is to play 90 minutes each game without breaking a bone as I’ve broken two in the last two years.

Do you have a favourite club/player? Who/why?

Favourite club would have to be Manchester United, my brother and I have supported them from a young age. Favourite player has to be Dawso (Luke Dawson from Tigers First Grade) the guy is just all class and a real tiger.

What is your best football memory?

Has to be back when l was playing for Manly and we beat Northern Tigers in a cup game – I saved Liam’s penalty in the shootout to go through to the final – sorry Liam!

Weekend Review: May 12-13

Our Youth NPL Under 13’s continued their impressive run of form, securing their third win in four matches on Saturday morning to kick-off the weekend’s action – congratulations to the team and coach Eilidh!

The Under 14’s followed with a 1-1 draw and despite some entertaining football our 15’s and 16’s fell to defeats against the visiting Hakoah teams.

In Men’s NPL 18’s and 20’s secured three points in their matches to continue their wonderful seasons, but First Grade incurred the wrath of St George’s Juan Carlos Heras Romero, who scored a brace and starred in a 5-1 scoreline.

Women’s NPL saw our Under 15’s secure another impressive result following last week’s win over Koalas, but with a injury-hit senior squad it was tough going in the remaining fixtures against Manly United.

Michelle Heyman Makes Her Tigers Debut

Matildas striker Michelle Heyman pulled on the green and white stripes for the first time this season on Sunday against NWS Koalas.

The 29-year-old slotted straight into the starting lineup and showed her class, constantly threatening the Koalas defence throughout the match. Despite not finding the back of the net, a first goal for the club is not far away based on Sunday’s performance!

Michelle is the fourth Matildas representative to play for the club this season, alongside Eliza Campbell, Ellie Brush and Servet Uzunlar.

Tigers finished the match 2-1 victors thanks to a spectacular winner from Hannah McNulty, extending our unbeaten run to six matches!

The team is back at home this Sunday at NTRA, hosting defending champions and current ladder leaders Manly United FC.

First Grade kicks off at 3pm, Reserve Grade at 1.05pm – come on down and support the players!

Weekend Review: May 5-6

Saturday saw only our NPL Youth players in action, making a long trip out to face Macarthur Rams at Lynwood Park. It was a strong afternoon of results, picking up two wins, a draw and a loss across all age groups to match last week’s results against Spirit FC.

On Sunday our Women’s NPL visited the newly reopened Christie Park to take on NWS Koalas. Two good wins to start the day from our 14’s and 15’s was tempered by a pair of the defeats in the next two games, leaving the First Grade fixture to decide the winning club on the day.

The players were up to the task, with Hannah McNulty scoring a spectacular winner in the final minutes to bring the points home in a 2-1 win. The game also saw Matildas representative Michelle Heyman make her debut for Tigers – welcome Michelle!!

Our Men’s NPL 2 were also in action on Sunday, visting North Shore Mariners at Northbridge Oval. First Grade were undone by a late goal after battling back to level terms after going two behind early on, while the Under 20’s and Under 18’s continued their strong form this season with a pair of victories!

Player Profile: Emma Smith

To most people in the club you’re known as KK, how did you get this nickname?

When I was in the under 12’s we had a team that had 3 Emmas and 3 Emilys, so everyone got a nickname. At the time I was competing in karate competitions so my coach decided to call me Karate Kid. It was a bit of a mouthful on the field, and in all honesty I wasn’t the biggest fan of it, so with time the name eventually got shortened to KK. I didn’t really think it would stick for this long, but every team I moved into had at least one other Emma on it, so it was easy to offer up KK as an alternative. Now it’s just apart of who I am on the field, I don’t respond to Emma at all anymore!

How long have you been playing for Northern Tigers?

This year will be my second season at Tigers.

Which clubs have you previously played for?

When I first started playing I played for a local club on the Central Coast, Wyoming FC. I then began playing for Central Coast Mariners (Central Coast Lightning at the time) and played with them until last season when I made the move to Tigers.

What do you enjoy most about playing for Northern Tigers?

Overall, I love the girls and the atmosphere the club has. The club atmosphere and support at Tigers from across the whole club is something I’ve never seen before and it’s a really cool thing to be a part of. It makes playing on the field with the girls one of the best experiences. Everyone is there for each other, working hard till the very end. It’s truly like a little family that I feel very blessed to be involved in.

What position do you play? Have you always played there?

I am usually in the number 4 position (centre back) but have spent time floating into different positions along the back line for a few games during different seasons. I originally played in midfield until I was about 14 when my coach pulled a surprise move half way through the season and put me into centre back, a position I’d never played before. I must of done something right because I’ve never permanently moved from that position since.

What is your personal goal for this season?

There are multiple things that I would like to work on this season. Mainly I would like to work on becoming a better option on the field during games and become a more active player in keeping possession. I need to begin to do this quicker and with more anticipation. I’d also like to improve my strength and range in my longer kicks.

Do you have a favourite team/player? Who/why?

My favourite team would definitely have to be the Matildas. I love what they’re doing for women’s football in Australia and how they’re really showing the Australian public how far women’s football has come. They’re also a super entertaining team to watch, some of the goals they have scored this year have been amazing. In saying that, my FIFA pick is always AC Milan. Why? I don’t know. When I was younger I loved their stripey shirts (must be why I’m at Tigers!) and I’ve never chosen any other team since. My favourite player has always been and probably always will be David Beckham. I loved his free kicking ability and his playing style and would watch any video I could to try and copy the curve he could get. He played midfield and is married to a spice girl, the perfect combination, so there’s really no one else.

Weekend Review: April 28-29

We had a fantastic turnout at NTRA over the past two days for our Annual Club Weekend, thanks to everyone who came along to support our players!

An early downpour couldn’t dampen the spirit of our Youth NPL players as they kicked off proceedings on Saturday morning against Spirit FC. Two wins, a draw and a loss across the four age groups.

Men’s NPL welcomed club championship leaders Mount Druitt on Saturday night and produced a three great performances to come away with an unbeaten record.

Women’s NPL kicked off on Sunday with some disappointing results, but the presence of a massive crowd for the senior matches in the afternoon provided an incredible atmosphere. 17’s, and First Grade could not be split, with Reserves unfortunately conceding late.

A big thank you to all the supporters, players, coaches, team officials and volunteers who contributed to this weekend!

Player Profile: Ally Brown

How long have you been playing for Northern Tigers?

This is my fourth year with Tigers. I had one year in the U/20’s, one year transitioning between 20’s and first grade and then two years in first grade.

Which clubs have you previously played for?

I’ve been everywhere! I’ve been at Blacktown City, APIA, NSW Institute, Central Coast Mariners NYL and now finally settled at Tigers.

What have you enjoyed most about playing for Northern Tigers?

It really is a great club to be a part of.  Off the field, everyone is always fun to be around but we also make sure to work hard and do our thing on the field.

What position do you play? Have you always played there?

I’m currently playing in the attacking midfield role.  Growing up, I played a bit deeper in midfield and also plenty of left back but I’m definitely enjoying having the freedom to be as creative as I can further forward.

What is your personal goal for this season?

Obviously the main one is to win the league, hopefully I can do my part and contribute wherever I can.

Do you have a favourite club/player? Who/why?

I’m a big fan of Juan Mata.  He seems like a really genuine guy who always looks like he’s having fun when he plays.  Obviously he’s also very talented and I love his style and ability to create opportunities for the team.

What is your best football memory?

In 2015, I was lucky enough to go on a football tour to France and Spain. Amongst plenty of other experiences, we were able to watch Barcelona play live at the Camp Nou and also watch Atletico Madrid vs. Real Madrid live in the Champions League quarter-final.  The atmosphere was crazy and something I’ll always remember.

Player Profile: Josie Wilson

How long have you been playing for Northern Tigers?

This is my 9th year at Tigers (including development squad).

Which clubs have you previously played for?

I played for Lindfield before I came to Tigers.

What have you enjoyed most about playing for Northern Tigers?

What I enjoy most about playing for Tigers is definitely that it is the perfect combination of playing competitive soccer at a high level, whilst also having fun and making lifelong friends. Through the club I have learnt so much and improved heaps in soccer, whilst also constantly laughing and having fun with some of my best mates!

What position do you play? Have you always played there?

I am a winger now, but when I first started at Tigers I played as a centre back!

What is your personal goal for this season?

My goal for this season is to improve my one on ones and score more goals!

Do you have a favourite club/player? Who/why?

Hannah McNulty (she asked me to say her!). Jokes aside, I’ve got to say either Sam Kerr for her ability to consistently score amazing goals (and she can backflip), or Marta because of her incredible skills.

What is your best football memory?

I’d definitely say getting to playing alongside and learning from some really experienced players like Servet, Eliza, Ellie Brush and soon to be Michelle Heyman! Playing with 4 Matildas is pretty cool!
