The Rise of Eliza Brown: A Decade with the Northern Tigers

Photo credit: Dan Ullman – Aptitude Photography

Eliza’s journey with the Northern Tigers is a story of loyalty, perseverance, and passion. Now a key player in the Women’s U23s, part of the Women’s Senior Squad, she’s been with the club for ten seasons – starting at just nine years old in the first ever Girls U10 team. From early injuries to big comebacks, Eliza has experienced the full spectrum of football life.

As the Senior Women’s squad builds on the momentum of last year’s Sapphire Cup triumph, she reflects on what drives the team’s success, what it means to be part of the Northern Tigers family, and her aspirations for the future – both personally and for the team.

The Northern Tigers Senior Women’s squad have had some great success over the past couple of years, including winning the Sapphire Cup last year. What do you put the success of the Women’s Senior Squad to and what aspirations do the team have for the season?

I aspire to win the grand final, of course. I know we can do it. The team is all-powerful and committed. The Senior Women’s squad has a winning mindset; we are all very competitive! And our coaches Danilo, Chris and Finn have something to do with that as well. The aspiration of the team for the season is to stay committed and have each other’s back the entire journey of the season.

What has your experience been like moving from Northern Tigers junior teams into the Women’s Senior Squad?

The senior squad is very welcoming. I moved to the U23s last year but injured my medial ligament in my knee early in the season. I had trained with Coach Pat Sullivan in the Youth League, and he was great. I knew majority of the players who moved to the Women’s Senior squad which was perfect. The football playing is different, we have Matt as the strength and conditioning coach which we didn’t have in youth, as well, the pace and determination in training is so big.

What position do you play, and how many goals have you scored, and assists made this season?

I am usually in midfield, attacking, and sometimes I play as a striker, however, towards the middle of this season I was playing as a joint 6 with one of my teammates. This season, I have scored 3 and assisted in multiple goals, I’m not too sure how many.

Where did your football journey begin?

My football journey began around kindergarten when I played on a mixed team with my primary school friends for the Highfield Family Football Club. The Highfield Family then merged with Lindfield, and I started playing for Lindfield Football Club in the boys’ team.

Please talk us through your football career before joining the Northern Tigers including where and how you started playing NPL football.

I started at Northern Tigers very young, so I didn’t have a football career beforehand. I played for the Highfield Family Football Club for around 2-3 years before it merged with Lindfield Football Club, where I played for the boys’ team until I moved to Northern Tigers at the age of 9 to join the first U10 girls’ team.

What attracted you to join the Northern Tigers?

Northern Tigers were beginning the girls’ SAP (now known as GJDL) program – so I was in the first group and have been at the Northern Tigers ever since.

What would completion of the Home of Football mean to the Northern Tigers Senior Women’s squad?

My pop and grandma like to come and watch me when I play at home. Pop tries to come every week, and sometimes Grandma won’t come because it’s too cold, now she’ll have no excuse. It would be great for the team having supporters coming and it would make an even bigger community.

What characteristics are Northern Tigers teams known for amongst their opponents?

The Northern Tigers teams are always seen as a threat and a challenge. And to also never count them out. Sometimes, the Northern Tigers have bad days, but they should never be underestimated. We are also seen as a very friendly club, welcoming. That could be the reason for lots of players moving to Northern Tigers at the end of a season.

What are your aspirations at the Northern Tigers and in football?

I have had a few injuries over the last few years – ischial tuberosity fracture, concussion and medial ligament – so I am happy to be on the field and playing football. I hope to continue playing high-level football and injury-free.

How important is the Northern Tigers as a pathway for local female aspiring players?

The Northern Tigers as a pathway is essential – I have been here for 10 years and had great opportunities. There is the Talent Support Program (TSP) through Football NSW, as well as participation in the Metro North team at various age levels. Northern Tigers give girls a chance to play at a very competitive skill level, and I have had opportunities to play in semi-finals and grand finals over the years. So, this is the highest level you can play at weekly in NSW – its importance should not be underestimated.

What do you like about the Northern Tigers?

My experience with Northern Tigers has been fantastic; they have listened to me and provided great opportunities. I like that they take their football seriously, but I can still have fun.

Ally Brown: A Northern Tiger Through and Through

From his first steps in grassroots football to becoming a cornerstone of Northern Tigers’ First Grade team, Ally Brown’s journey has been one of dedication, growth and performance. We spoke to Ally, who opens up about his football beginnings, what makes the Northern Tigers special, and the team’s ambitions as they chase success on both league and national stages.

Where did your football journey begin?

I started in the U6s with Wahroonga Tigers before moving to West Pymble Football Club for U10s through to U12s. From there, I progressed into youth football with Blacktown City Football Club (U13s and U14s), APIA Leichardt Football Club (U15s), and FNSW Institute (U16). I then joined the Central Coast Mariners as part of their A-League Youth setup. After a couple of seasons there, I moved to Northern Tigers to play U20s and eventually First Grade.

What attracted you to join the Northern Tigers?

At the time, I was still in school, and Northern Tigers felt like the right fit — a well-organised club close to home. I already knew a few of the boys playing there, and they spoke highly of the culture and setup.

When did you join the Northern Tigers, and how many seasons have you played for the Northern Tigers?

I joined in 2015 and have played every season since, apart from 2023 when I spent a year with Sutherland Sharks, which was a great experience — an NPL 1 team filled with players pushing for the A-League. I really enjoyed my time there, but I missed the camaraderie and culture we have at Northern Tigers.

What do you attribute this season’s success of the Men’s First Grade team to, and what aspirations does the team have for the season?

Our success this season comes down to a few key factors. We’ve recruited well — there’s been a lot of thought behind the type of players we’ve brought in. Not only do they fit our system tactically and technically, but they also embody what it means to be a Northern Tiger. We’ve been consistent with our playing style since day one of pre-season. The coaching staff have been brilliant in making expectations clear in every phase of play, then it’s up to us as players to go out and execute. As is often said, the togetherness of this group has been massive, and it’s what we believe will get us over the line.

What positions have you been playing this season?

I started the season as a wingback. Up until about 18 years old, I was always a left back, so I’m comfortable playing there when called upon.  As we started to get more players fit, I pushed into midfield, which is typically where I’m most comfortable.  We will see what happens with this last string of games. I’m always happy to play whatever role is required.

The Men’s team have been on a great run in the league and the Australia Cup – to what do you attribute the success of the team for the season to date?

Balancing league and cup competitions is always tough. On one hand, you’re pushing for promotion in the league, and on the other, there’s something special about cup football. We’ve already shown we have the squad depth to compete on both fronts. The coaching staff and physios have done a fantastic job preparing us physically for midweek fixtures on top of Saturdays. This is when all those tough pre-season runs and Tuesday night box-to-boxes start to pay off.

How much do you think the team will benefit from the narrow 1-0 Waratah Cup final loss to Sydney United 58, and how will that match benefit the team when playing the same opponents in the Australia Cup Round of 32 match?

We learned a lot from that final. Sydney United 58 is a top side, but I think we gave them a bit too much respect early on and let them play. They punished us for that. In the second half, we made it much harder for them and started to gain control. It’s just a shame we couldn’t find that equaliser. Heading into the Round of 32, we’re confident we can apply those lessons and take the next step on the national stage.

First time for the Northern Tigers in the Round of 32 of the Australia Cup, and we have drawn Sydney United 58 once again – how far can the team go in the competition?

At first, we were a bit disappointed to draw another NSW team — and to play Sydney United 58 again. But looking at it now, it’s a huge opportunity to push into the Round of 16. Right now, our focus is on the league, but when the time comes, we’ll be ready. Northern Tigers teams have always lifted against top opposition, like we did against APIA Leichardt, and this is another chance to prove people wrong and go even further in the Cup.

What was the atmosphere like for the Waratah Cup final match v Sydney United at VSP, and what role did the Northern Tigers supporters play for the team?

It was honestly brilliant. Sydney United 58 is known for its loud fan base, but during the final, it felt like all you could hear were the Tigers supporters. It gave us a huge lift in the second half and reminded us that we’re playing for more than just ourselves; we’re representing everyone connected to the club. We’re incredibly grateful for that support and can’t wait to hear it even louder for the Australia Cup.

What would completion of the Home of Football mean to the Northern Tigers Senior Men’s team?

It’s massive for us, really the missing piece for the club moving forward. We want NTRA to be a place we’re proud to bring family and friends, and one that’s worthy of hosting NPL 1 football.

What characteristics are Northern Tigers teams known for amongst their opponents?

Everyone around the NSW leagues will tell you, Northern Tigers teams are known for being hardworking, well-organised, cohesive, and incredibly tough to beat.

What do you like about the Northern Tigers?

There’s so much to love. For me, there’s a real sense of home when I pull on a Northern Tigers shirt. I’ve been here a long time and had the chance to play with some outstanding players, many of whom have become my closest mates and people I’ve travelled the world with. Northern Tigers is more than just a place to train or play, it’s family.

A Journey Through the Ranks with Kai Denton

From kicking a ball at age five on the Northern Beaches to scoring decisive goals for the First Grade Men’s team, Kai Denton has become a key figure at the Northern Tigers. A proud Berowra local, Kai joined the club in 2016 as a 12 year old and is one of the shining examples of a First Grade player who has come through the Youth Boys program. His football story is one of hard work, family support, and deep commitment to the club culture that continues to shape the Tigers’ identity.

We caught up with Kai to reflect on his football journey, the current season’s success, and what makes playing for the Northern Tigers so special.

Where did your football journey begin?

I started playing when I was 5 for Pittwater RSL Football Club on the Northern Beaches. Mum and Dad were my first coaches, so it’s fitting that they are still involved with my football as managers of Tigers Men’s First Grade.

Please talk us through your football career before joining the Northern Tigers including where and how you started playing NPL football.

I never played SAP, just local football for Pittwater RSL Football Club, and then Terrigal United Football Club on the Central Coast when we moved up there.

We moved back down to Sydney when I started year 7 and I trialled for the U13s Northern Tigers Team and made it in. I was 12.

I played U13s through to U18s at Northern Tigers.

I moved to Blacktown City for a couple years when I was 17 and played U18s and U20s there. I came back to Northern Tigers for my second year of U20s and had a good season and was promoted to the First Grade team mid-season.

What attracted you to join the Northern Tigers?

Initially, I didn’t know anything about them. I was asked to trial after attending a holiday camp, but the reason I stayed so long and came back was the culture of the club. The playing culture and coaching standards are top quality and there is a strong ambition throughout all age groups to succeed and win, whilst developing players.

When did you join the Northern Tigers and how many seasons have you played for the Tigers?

I joined Tigers in 2015 in under U13s. This is my 9th season at the club.

How many years have you been in the First Grade Men’s team for the Northern Tigers?

This is my third year in the first grade team.

What do you put this season’s success of the Men’s First Grade team to and what aspirations do the team have for the season?

The squad is extremely close-knit with some talented players, and we have built a strong culture of accountability and support. Our coaching staff are always organised, professional and effectively prepare us for each game. Our aspirations are to win the league and get promoted, and go as far as we can in the Australia Cup.

You have been one of our key strikers for a few years now. You were top scorer for the League One competition in 2023, before being out with injury for the first half of the 2024 season. How is your season going this year and how many goals have you scored / assists made?

It’s been a good season as a team so far. We are not only scoring a lot of goals but have conceded the least in the league too. Points to everyone executing and performing well. I have scored 18 in the league and 5 in our cup run so it’s been pretty good personally, but it’s a credit to everyone on the field to the amount of chances we are creating.

The Men’s team have been on a great run in the league and the Australia Cup – to what do you put the success of the team for the season to date?

Our depth, coaching, and togetherness have been the key so far. Everyone knows their role and brings intensity to training every week. We are taking each game as it comes and not getting carried away.

You have a couple of brothers also at the Northern Tigers – please talk us through their football and what teams they are currently in?

Yeh it’s special to have both my brothers at the club too. Zane is a midfielder in the U18s and Bodie is one of our Goalkeepers in Men’s First Grade. With Bodie being a goalkeeper and myself being a striker there is always a huge level of competitiveness at training as we try and better one another. Zane has also trained with us a few times – all 3 of us training together is pretty fun.

Your parents James and Nat are our First Grade team managers. What does their support mean to you and your brothers for your football?

Yeh it’s a whole family affair at the Northern Tigers! It’s awesome having mum and dad at the games every week. Their support is the best and they don’t miss a game. They were my first coaches back in U6’s so it’s fitting and special they are still involved.

You scored the winner in our fantastic 3-2 away win against APIA Leichhardt in the Waratah Cup semi-final which qualified the Club for our first Waratah Cup Final. Please talk us through the goal and the second half of that match. What was it like scoring the winner?

The second half was one of the best quality and intense games I have been a part of. We went up 1-0 early in the half with a screamer from Connor, before APIA showed their quality and got 2 goals of their own. Even when losing we always had belief that we could get a result out of the game and that’s exactly what we did. Ally scored a beauty with 10 mins to go, and from there we had the momentum and knew we needed to get another one to avoid going to extra time. Scoring the winner in the 89th minute was an awesome feeling and one I won’t forget. The team deserved the win, and I was glad I converted the chance.

It is the first time for the Tigers in Round of 32 of the Australia Cup and we have drawn Sydney United 58 once again – how far can the team go in the competition?

Obviously, it’s not ideal drawing Sydney United 58 again, we were hoping for an A League Team or anyone from outside of Sydney to test ourselves against teams around the country. But we will approach it like any other game, and it’s a great chance to put ourselves into the final 16 which is exciting for the club.

What would completion of the Home of Football mean to the Northern Tigers first Grade Men’s team?

It would be a huge game changer. Our cup run proves how much we need this facility. We are in the last 32 teams in the Australia Cup and have a home game, however we cannot play at NTRA as the facilities are not up to standard for this level of competition. We have proved we are good enough to compete at the high level, so having a professional facility to support would mean everything. As a club, it would also help develop the younger teams and raise the whole club’s profile.

What characteristics are Northern Tigers teams known for amongst their opponents?

Relentless energy, discipline, and togetherness. We’re a tough team to break down and tough to outwork.

What do you like about the Northern Tigers?

The culture. As a team, we have great fun off the field and are extremely competitive on the field. Training is always high intensity, and we always push each other. The club culture is evident too; we always have younger boys and girls from the club watching our games which means a lot.

Izzy Gomez: A Journey of Passion, Persistence, and Pride

Isabel (Izzy) Gomez has enjoyed a breakthrough season in 2025, establishing herself as a regular starter and key player for the Central Coast Mariners in the Women’s A-League competition. Izzy became the first female Mariners player to take out the PFA Player of the month award in November before once again taking out the award in March. Izzy’s breakout season was not without its challenges – her joy at being selected to the Matildas for the first time in November was tempered by an untimely injury which delayed her Matildas debut after earning selection for home series against Brazil in November and December.

Izzy returned from injury in time for an incredible finals series with the Central Coast Mariners, which culminated in her scoring an extra-time winner in the semi-final on 11 May to hand Melbourne City their first defeat of the season. On the 18th of May, the Central Coast Mariners won the Women’s A-League Grand Final against Melbourne Victory and Izzy was named Player of the Match. On the 2nd of June, Izzy made her debut for the Matildas in Canberra against Argentina, achieving a lifelong dream and capping an incredible season for someone whom we are proud to know as a Northern Tigers player and local junior.

Izzy has become a standout player in Women’s football in Australia, known for her tremendous athletic and technical ability as well as her determination on the pitch and her unwavering commitment to her team. From grassroots beginnings to playing on the national stage with the Matildas and winning the Women’s A-League Championship, Izzy’s story is a testament to the rewards that can be achieved through hard work and a love for the game.

We sat down with Izzy to reflect on her footballing journey, her time with the Northern Tigers, and her aspirations for the future.

Where did your football journey begin?

My football journey began at my local club, Mount Colah Football Club.

When did you join the Northern Tigers and how many seasons have you played for the Tigers?

I first joined the Northern Tigers at Girls’ Youth U13 for two years. Then I came back for the Women’s First Grade team.

How many years have you been in the Senior Women’s squad for the Northern Tigers?

I have been in the senior women’s squad for five years.

What do you put this season’s success of the Senior Women’s squad down to and what aspirations does the team have for the season?

I think the Northern Tigers provide an environment that is supportive and positive, which has led to the season’s success so far. The team’s aspiration is to win the league.

What was it like winning the Women’s A-League Championship and what was the atmosphere like at the Grand Final?

It was a surreal experience – something that will stick with me forever. The atmosphere was electric and really helped push us right to the end.

What was being in camp for the Matildas like? Please tell us about your Matilda’s debut.

It was a great experience to play with the best players in Australia. The training was high intensity, and the coaching staff were supportive. Debuting was an unforgettable moment and playing in front of a massive crowd – including family and friends cheering me on – was an amazing feeling.

Did you think you would be good enough to be selected for the Matildas, and has it always been a goal of yours?

I have always dreamed to play for Australia.

Do you aspire to play football professionally overseas?

It has always been a goal of mine to play overseas.

What would completion of the Home of Football mean to the Northern Tigers Senior Women’s squad?

Having the completion of Home of Football would mean a lot. It would attract more family and friends with better seating and facilities and improve the atmosphere of the Club.

What characteristics are Northern Tigers teams known for amongst their opponents?

We are seen as a competitive, aggressive team that fights for each other.

You have been at the Northern Tigers a long time – what do you like about the Club?

What I enjoy most is the culture of the club and how it is like a family environment – everyone is welcomed.

Captain Lachlan Lloyd Celebrates 150 First Grade Appearances

Northern Tigers Senior Men’s Captain Lachlan Lloyd made his 150th First Grade league appearance last weekend in the 1-0 win over Mounties Wanderers FC.

Lachie progressed through the Northern Tigers youth program and made his First Grade debut in 2018. Since making his First Grade debut, he has become a central figure both on and off the field, leading by example and playing a key role in the team’s development.

Technical Director Jason Eagar, who has known Lachlan since his arrival at Northern Tigers, praised the milestone achievement:

”Congratulations to Lachie on achieving the 150 First Grade game milestone, thoroughly deserved. I gave Lachie his First Grade debut in 2018, from day one his performances justified the opportunity he was given at a young age. His loyalty and commitment are a credit to him and he sets a great example for young players now coming into the First Grade environment. It is often said the Tigers culture is strong, players like Lachie is the reason why.”

We sat down with Lachie to reflect on his footballing journey and his thoughts on the 2025 season.

Lachie, where did your football journey begin?

My football journey started in the backyard with my older brothers when I was young. I played my first official games for Lindfield Football Club in the Under 5s.

When did you join the Northern Tigers and how many seasons have you played for the club?

I joined the club in the Under 11s, and this is now my 15th season with the club.

How many years have you been in the Senior Men’s squad for the Northern Tigers?

I made my First Grade debut late in the 2018 season against Bankstown Berries and became a full-time member of the squad in 2019.

Men’s First Grade have had a strong first half of the season, what aspirations do the team have for the season?

We’ve got high aspirations this year. Our main goal is promotion into NPL Men’s – something the club has been working towards for a long time. It would mean so much to finally achieve it. Another big goal was qualifying for the Round of 32 in the Australia Cup for the first time in club history, and to achieve that has been very special.

This year’s squad is tight knit. It’s a great mix of ages, and everyone gets along so well. The competitive nature within the group has really lifted our standards – you’ve got to be at your best to keep your spot, and that’s pushed us forward.

What was the atmosphere like at NTRA for the last Australia Cup match against Hills United and how did the crowd impact the team’s performance?

The atmosphere was incredible. The crowd absolutely played a part in helping us get over the line and make history. Hopefully, we’ll keep seeing that kind of support throughout the rest of the season as we push for NPL1.

The Northern Tigers are in the Round of 32 of the Australia Cup for the first time -how far can the team go, and what kind of draw are you hoping for?

The whole squad is pumped to showcase our talent on the national stage. Ideally, we’d love to draw an A-League team at home – to play against the best, on our turf, with friends and family in the stands, would be unforgettable. That said, the boys wouldn’t mind an interstate away trip either!

What would the completion of the ‘Home of Football’ mean to the Northern Tigers Senior Men’s squad?

It would be massive. Over the past decade, the club has worked so hard to create a professional environment for players to develop both on and off the pitch. Having a dedicated facility like the Home of Football would be the final piece to help the club grow even further.

What characteristics are Northern Tigers teams known for amongst their opponents?

I’d love for our club to be known for our work ethic and that never-give-up attitude. That’s what we pride ourselves on. Personally, I’m far from the most technical player, but I’ve been able to carve out a decent career through hard work and persistence.

You’ve been at the Northern Tigers a long time — what do you like about the club?

It’s a club built around family and friendships, while still pushing hard for success. Some of my closest mates are here, and I really value the relationships I’ve built over the years.

Any final thoughts?

Just that it’s an exciting time to be part of the Northern Tigers. The support from fans, volunteers, coaches, and everyone behind the scenes means a lot to the playing group. Hopefully, there are more special moments to come this season!
